Map Quiz – Former Soviet Union: Countries

Questions: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan

The Soviet Union, established in 1922, was a vast socialist federation spanning Eastern Europe and Northern Asia. It consisted of 15 republics, dominated by Russia but including nations such as Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and the Baltic states.

By the late 1980s, economic stagnation, political reforms under Mikhail Gorbachev, and rising nationalist movements weakened central control. The failed coup in Moscow in August 1991 accelerated the disintegration.

In December 1991, the USSR was formally dissolved. Its 15 republics became independent countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.

The breakup reshaped the global balance of power, marking the end of the Cold War and giving rise to new nations with diverse political and economic paths.
