Iraq is a country in Western Asia, bordered by Turkey, Iran, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Syria. Much of its population is concentrated around the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, which flow southeast through the country toward the Persian Gulf.

Iraq is divided into governorates, which form the country's main administrative divisions. Baghdad Governorate contains the national capital, while other major governorates include Basra in the south, Nineveh in the north, and Anbar, which covers a large area of western Iraq.

The Kurdistan Region in northern Iraq includes several governorates and has a high degree of autonomy within the country.

In 1025, Halabja received federal recognition as Iraq’s nineteenth governorate.

This map quiz helps you learn the locations of Iraq's governorates and become familiar with the administrative geography of this important country in Western Asia.
