The states east of the Mississippi tend to be smaller in land area than those in the west, with some exceptions like Florida and Georgia. The geography is diverse, ranging from the Appalachian Mountains, which stretch from Alabama to Maine, to the Great Lakes in the Midwest, and the Atlantic Coast. Rivers, forests, and rolling hills are common features, making this region lush and scenic.
The eastern states were the first areas of the U.S. to be heavily populated by European settlers. Native American tribes had long thrived in these regions before the arrival of Europeans in the 16th and 17th centuries. Colonization began with settlements like Jamestown, Virginia (1607) and Plymouth, Massachusetts (1620). By the 18th century, the area was densely populated, and it became the cradle of the American Revolution and the founding of the United States.
