The United States has 50 states, each with its own capital city. The Mississippi River is one of the most important rivers in the country, dividing it roughly in half. The states located to the east of the river have played a major role in American history, from the founding of the first colonies to the Civil War and beyond.

There are 26 states east of the Mississippi River, and each has a capital city where the state government is based. Some of these capitals are large and well-known, while others are smaller but still important.

Boston, Massachusetts, is one of the oldest cities in the United States. It played a key role in the American Revolution, and today it remains a center for education and history. Albany, the capital of New York, is located along the Hudson River and has been a center for trade and government since the colonial era. Raleigh, North Carolina, was named after Sir Walter Raleigh, the English explorer who helped establish early settlements in America. Atlanta, Georgia, was almost completely destroyed during the Civil War but has since grown into one of the largest cities in the country.

Some state capitals, like Indianapolis, Indiana, and Columbus, Ohio, are among the largest cities in their states. Others, like Montpelier, Vermont, are much smaller but still serve as the headquarters for the state government.

State capitals are important because they are home to the governor’s office, the state legislature, and other government offices. Even though they are not always the largest cities in their states, they are the places where laws are made, policies are decided, and leaders work to govern their states.
