Indiana has 92 counties, each functioning as a local government unit responsible for services such as law enforcement, transportation, and public administration. The most populous county is Marion County, home to the state capital, Indianapolis, while the least populated is Ohio County in the southeastern part of the state. The largest county by area is Allen County in northeastern Indiana, and the smallest is Ohio County. Many counties were named after early American leaders, Native American tribes, and military figures. Indiana’s counties reflect the state’s geographical diversity, from the flat farmland of the central region to the rolling hills of southern Indiana and the industrial centers in the northwest near Lake Michigan.
