Kentucky has 120 counties, the fourth-highest number of any U.S. state, each serving as a local government responsible for public services such as law enforcement, infrastructure, and administration. The most populous county is Jefferson County, which contains the city of Louisville, while the least populated is Robertson County in the northeastern part of the state. The largest county by area is Pike County in eastern Kentucky, known for its coal mining history, whereas the smallest is Gallatin County along the Ohio River. Many counties are named after historical figures, Revolutionary War heroes, and geographical landmarks. Kentucky’s counties reflect the state’s diverse landscape, from the Appalachian Mountains in the east to the rolling Bluegrass region and the flatlands of the western Jackson Purchase
