Mississippi has 82 counties, which serve as local government divisions handling administrative, judicial, and infrastructure-related functions. The most populous county is Hinds County, home to the state capital, Jackson, while the least populated is Issaquena County in the western part of the state. The largest county by area is Yazoo County, covering part of the Mississippi Delta region, whereas the smallest is Alcorn County in the northeastern part of the state. Many counties are named after Native American words, historical figures, and geographical landmarks. Mississippi’s counties range from fertile agricultural lands in the Delta to rolling hills in the north and pine forests in the south.
