Nebraska has 93 counties, making it one of the states with the most counties in the U.S. The most populous county is Douglas County, home to Omaha, the state's largest city, while the least populated is McPherson County in the central part of the state. The largest county by area is Cherry County, covering a vast stretch of the Sandhills region, whereas the smallest is Sarpy County, located just south of Omaha. Many counties are named after early settlers, military leaders, and Native American tribes. Nebraska’s counties reflect the state’s diverse geography, from fertile farmlands and rolling prairies to sand dunes and river valleys.
