'Ziemniak,' or 'potato' in English, has a deep-rooted history in Poland. Introduced to Poland in the 18th century, potatoes quickly became a staple of Polish cuisine. The name 'ziemniak' is derived from the word 'ziemia,' which means 'earth' or 'soil' in Polish, highlighting the earthy origin of this tuber. Potatoes play a central role in many traditional Polish dishes, such as 'pierogi' (dumplings) with potato filling, 'placki ziemniaczane' (potato pancakes), and 'żurek' (sour rye soup) often served with chunks of boiled potato.
