Christianity is the dominant religion in many countries south of the equator, such as Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Angola. Traditional beliefs remain influential in rural areas, and Islam is also practiced in countries like Tanzania and Mozambique.

English is widely spoken in countries such as South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Zambia, while Portuguese is the official language in Mozambique and Angola. Indigenous languages, like Zulu in South Africa and Shona in Zimbabwe, are also commonly spoken.

Swahili is also one of the most commonly used languages in the region and serves as a lingua franca in countries like Tanzania, Kenya (north of the equator), Mozambique, Malawi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (partly south of the equator).

The highest mountain in this region is Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895 m) in Tanzania. It is the tallest mountain in Africa and a dormant volcano, drawing climbers and adventurers from around the world.
