Central Asia, in its strictest definition, consists of the five former Soviet republics: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. It is bordered by Russia to the north, China to the east, Afghanistan to the south, and the Caspian Sea to the west. However, broader definitions sometimes include Afghanistan and parts of Iran, China, or Mongolia due to historical and cultural ties.

Historically, Central Asia was a key part of the Silk Road, facilitating trade and cultural exchange between Europe and Asia. The region's geography includes vast steppes, deserts, and mountain ranges such as the Tian Shan and Pamirs. Over centuries, it has been influenced by major empires, including the Persian, Mongol, and Russian Empires. The five Soviet republics of the region gained independence in 1991 following the dissolution of the USSR.

Today, Central Asia's economies are largely based on natural resources, agriculture, and trade, while its cultural heritage reflects a mix of Turkic, Persian, and Russian influences. The region remains geopolitically significant due to its strategic location and rich energy reserves.
