Map Quiz – Bolivia: Departments

Questions: Beni, Chuquisaca, Cochabamba, La Paz, Oruro, Pando, Potosí, Santa Cruz, Tarija

Bolivia is divided into nine departments and is one of South America’s most geographically diverse countries, despite having no coastline.

In the west, the high-altitude Altiplano dominates departments such as La Paz and Oruro, characterized by cold climates, wide plateaus, and Lake Titicaca near the Peruvian border. This region is home to many of the country’s largest Indigenous communities.

The central part of Bolivia includes mountainous and valley regions, notably in Cochabamba, where milder climates support agriculture and dense settlement. To the south, Potosí is known for its arid landscapes and historic mining areas.

Eastern Bolivia is largely lowland and tropical. Santa Cruz, the largest and most populous department, consists of plains and forests and has become the country’s main economic hub. Further north, Beni and Pando are sparsely populated and covered by Amazonian rainforest and river systems.

The administrative capital, La Paz, sits high in the Andes, while Sucre is the constitutional capital and historical center of the country.
