Switzerland is divided into 26 cantons, which function as federal states within the Swiss Confederation. Each canton has its own constitution, legislature, government, and judicial system, granting them a high degree of autonomy. The cantons vary in size, population, and economic significance, with some, such as Zurich and Geneva, being major financial and business centers, while others, like Uri and Appenzell Innerrhoden, have smaller populations and a strong focus on agriculture and tourism.

The origins of the Swiss cantons date back to the medieval period, with the first three forming the Old Swiss Confederacy in 1291. Over time, additional cantons joined, culminating in the modern federal state in 1848. The official languages of Switzerland—German, French, Italian, and Romansh—are spoken in different cantons, reflecting the country's linguistic and cultural diversity.

Each canton is represented in the Swiss federal government through the Council of States, where all cantons have equal representation. Despite their autonomy, cantons coordinate policies on issues such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure at the national level.
