China is divided into several province-level administrative divisions, including 22 provinces, five autonomous regions (like Tibet and Xinjiang), four direct-controlled municipalities (Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, and Chongqing), and two special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau).

Taiwan is also claimed by China as its 23rd province, although it operates as an independent country with its own government and constitution. This claim is a major point of tension both within Taiwan and in international relations.
