In Turkey, each province (il) is assigned a specific number used for administrative and practical purposes, such as vehicle license plates and postal codes. The numbering ranges from 01 to 81 and was originally assigned based on the alphabetical order of the provinces' names at the time the system was established.
For example, Adana, numbered 01, is an important province in southern Turkey known for its vast agricultural lands and the famous Adana kebab. Ankara, with the number 06, is the country’s capital located in central Anatolia, serving as a major hub for politics and economics. İstanbul, numbered 34, is Turkey’s largest city, renowned for its rich historical and cultural heritage, situated along the Bosphorus. İzmir, with the number 35, is a significant coastal city by the Aegean Sea with a history that dates back to antiquity. Antalya, numbered 07, is a popular tourist destination on the Mediterranean coast, famous for its beaches and historical sites.
These province numbers are commonly seen on Turkish vehicle license plates, where the first two digits indicate the province where the car is registered. For instance, a car with a license plate beginning with 34 is registered in İstanbul, while one starting with 06 is registered in Ankara. This system makes it easy to quickly identify where a vehicle is from.
