Louisiana has 64 parishes, which function as the local government divisions instead of counties, as found in other states. The most populous parish is East Baton Rouge Parish, home to the state capital, Baton Rouge, while the least populated is Tensas Parish in the northeastern region. The largest parish by area is Cameron Parish, stretching across wetlands and coastline along the Gulf of Mexico, whereas the smallest is West Baton Rouge Parish, situated along the Mississippi River. Many parishes are named after French and Spanish influences, Native American tribes, and historical figures. Louisiana’s parishes reflect the state's range of landscapes, from the Mississippi River Delta and winding bayous to the pine forests of the north and the extensive wetlands of the south.
