Venezuela is divided into 23 states, a capital district, and a group of Federal Dependencies made up of Caribbean islands.

In the west, Zulia is shaped by the Lake Maracaibo basin, with lowlands and wetlands that form one of the country’s major population and economic areas. Far to the south, Amazonas is sparsely populated and dominated by rainforest and river systems.

Much of central Venezuela is covered by the Llanos, wide tropical grasslands across states such as Guárico and Apure, where cattle ranching is common. In the northwest, the Andean states, especially Mérida and Trujillo, are mountainous and cooler, with steep valleys and high ridges.

To the southeast, Bolívar, the largest state, includes large forested areas and rivers linked to the Orinoco basin and the Guiana Highlands. Along the northern coast, states such as Falcón and Carabobo combine coastal plains with nearby mountain ranges, while Nueva Esparta consists of Caribbean islands, including Margarita Island.

The capital district, home to Caracas, is Venezuela’s political and cultural center, set in a mountain valley close to the Caribbean Sea.
