Colombia is divided into 32 departments (departamentos), along with the Capital District of Bogotá. These departments differ widely in area, geography, and cultural character. Amazonas, located in the far southeast of the country, is the largest department by area, covering about 9% of Colombia’s territory. Much of it lies within the Amazon rainforest and is known for its vast river systems, low population density, and rich biodiversity. In contrast, Atlántico, on the Caribbean coast, is the smallest department. Despite its limited size, Atlántico is economically and culturally significant, home to the major port city of Barranquilla and known for its coastal location and vibrant traditions.
