South Korea is divided into several provincial-level administrative units. These include provinces, metropolitan cities, a special city, and a special self-governing province.

The country has nine provinces (do), which cover most of the land area. In addition, there are six metropolitan cities (gwangyeoksi) that have the same administrative level as provinces.

Seoul is designated as a special city and serves as the capital. Sejong is a special self-governing city, created to function as an administrative center.

Jeju is a special self-governing province with a higher degree of autonomy than other provinces. These different types of divisions together form the highest administrative level in South Korea.
