Latin America is generally defined as the region in the Americas where Romance languages, primarily Spanish and Portuguese, are spoken. It consists of Mexico, most of Central and South America, and parts of the Caribbean. The region is bordered by the United States to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, the Pacific Ocean to the west, and Antarctica to the south. Broader definitions sometimes include French-speaking territories such as Haiti and French Guiana.
Historically, Latin America was shaped by European colonization, primarily by Spain and Portugal, following Christopher Columbus’ arrival in 1492. The region saw the rise and fall of advanced pre-Columbian civilizations such as the Maya, Aztec, and Inca before coming under European rule. The 19th century was marked by independence movements, leading to the formation of modern nation-states. Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, Latin America has experienced political shifts, economic challenges, and social transformations.
