New Zealand is divided into 16 administrative regions. The current division was introduced in 1992 when the number of regions was reduced from 22 to 16. New Zealand's external areas include the territories of Tokelau, Niue, and the Cook Islands. These are self-governing but maintain close political and cultural ties with New Zealand, relying on it for defense and some international representation.
