Questions: Albany, Augusta, Boston, Concord, Harrisburg, Hartford, Montpelier, Providence, Trenton

The Northeastern United States includes nine states, each with its own capital city. This region is known for its early role in American history, from the first European settlements to the founding of the United States. Many of the capitals in the Northeast are among the oldest cities in the country and remain important political, cultural, and economic centers.

Boston, the capital of Massachusetts, is one of the most historic cities in America and played a central role in the American Revolution. Albany, the capital of New York, has long been a hub for trade and government, located along the Hudson River. Providence, the capital of Rhode Island, was founded in the 17th century and is known for its universities and cultural institutions. In Vermont, the small city of Montpelier is the least populous state capital in the country, but it still serves as the center of state government.

Other capitals in the region include Hartford, Connecticut, which became an early center for insurance and industry; Concord, New Hampshire, which reflects New England’s small-town character; and Augusta, Maine, located along the Kennebec River. Trenton, the capital of New Jersey, is historically significant for the Revolutionary War, while Harrisburg, Pennsylvania’s capital, grew as a major transportation and industrial center in the 19th century.

These capitals highlight the diversity of the Northeast. Some are large and well-known cities, while others are smaller but still essential as the seats of state government. Each plays a key role in shaping the identity and history of the region.
