Alabama has 67 counties, each serving as a local government unit responsible for services such as law enforcement, road maintenance, and public administration. The most populous county is Jefferson County, home to Birmingham, while the least populated is Greene County in the western part of the state. The largest county by area is Baldwin County, located along the Gulf Coast, and the smallest is Etowah County. Many counties were named after early American leaders, Native American tribes, or geographical features. The state's counties reflect Alabama’s diverse landscape, from the Appalachian foothills in the north to the Black Belt’s fertile farmland and the coastal plains in the south.
