California, located on the west coast of the USA, is the third-largest state after Alaska and Texas. It borders Oregon to the north, Nevada and Arizona to the east, and Mexico to the south. The capital is Sacramento, but its largest and most famous cities include Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego. The state features the highest point in the contiguous United States — Mount Whitney (14,505 feet or 4,421 meters) — as well as Death Valley, the lowest point in North America. California is known for its diverse climate and landscapes, ranging from deserts and mountains to the wild Pacific coastlines.
