Iowa has 99 counties, each functioning as a local government entity responsible for public services such as law enforcement, transportation, and public administration. The most populous county is Polk County, home to the state capital, Des Moines, while the least populated is Adams County in the southwestern part of the state. The largest county by area is Kossuth County in the north, while the smallest is Osceola County. Many counties are named after early American politicians, military leaders, and geographical features. Iowa’s counties reflect the state’s diverse landscapes, from the rolling prairies and farmland in the central and western regions to the bluffs along the Mississippi River in the east.
