The largest county by area is Idaho County, covering a vast expanse of rugged mountains and forests, whereas the smallest is Payette County in the western part of Idaho. Many counties are named after early settlers, Native American tribes, and geographical features. Idaho’s counties showcase the state’s diverse landscape, from the Rocky Mountains and Snake River Plain to the rich agricultural valleys and high desert regions.
