Maryland has 23 counties and one independent city, Baltimore, which functions as its own local government entity. The most populous county is Montgomery County, located near Washington, D.C., while the least populated is Kent County on the Eastern Shore. The largest county by area is Frederick County, covering part of western Maryland’s rolling hills and farmland, whereas the smallest is Howard County, situated between Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Many counties are named after British nobility, early settlers, and geographical features. Maryland’s counties range from urban and suburban areas in the central region to the rural farmland of the west and the Chesapeake Bay shoreline in the east.
