North Dakota has 53 counties, which play a role in local governance, law enforcement, and regional administration. The most populous county is Cass County, home to Fargo, the state's largest city, while the least populated is Slope County in the southwestern part of the state. The largest county by area is McKenzie County, located in the western oil-producing region, whereas the smallest is Eddy County in the central part of the state. Many counties are named after prominent politicians, military figures, and Native American words. North Dakota’s counties encompass a range of landscapes, from the rugged Badlands and the Missouri River Valley to vast open prairies and agricultural heartlands.
