New Hampshire is divided into 10 counties, which serve administrative, judicial, and regional planning roles. The most populous county is Hillsborough County, home to the cities of Manchester and Nashua, while the least populated is Coös County in the northernmost part of the state. Coös is also the largest county by area, encompassing much of the White Mountains and vast forests, whereas the smallest is Strafford County in the southeastern region. Many county names reflect New Hampshire’s colonial heritage, with ties to England and prominent historical figures. The state’s counties vary from densely populated urban centers to remote, mountainous areas with vast natural landscapes.
