Dive into the geography of the Lone Star State with a Texas map quiz!
Texas has 254 counties, the most of any U.S. state. The largest by population is Harris County, home to Houston, while the least populated is Loving County in West Texas. The largest county by area is Brewster County, which covers a vast portion of the Big Bend region, and the smallest is Rockwall County near Dallas. Many Texas counties were established during the 19th century and named after historical figures, Native American tribes, or Spanish and Mexican influences. County governments provide essential services such as law enforcement, infrastructure maintenance, and public records management.
