Dive into the geography of the Evergreen State with a Washington map quiz!
Washington State has 39 counties, ranging from densely populated urban centers to rural and remote areas. The most populous county is King County, which includes Seattle, while the least populated is Garfield County in the southeastern part of the state. Many counties were named after early explorers, Native American tribes, and political figures.
The counties serve as local government units, managing services such as law enforcement, transportation infrastructure, and public health. Due to Washington's diverse geography, counties vary significantly in climate and economy, with coastal counties relying on maritime industries, central counties focusing on agriculture, and eastern counties known for wheat farming and natural resource extraction.
