Spain is divided into 17 autonomous communities (comunidades autónomas) and two autonomous cities (Ceuta and Melilla) in North Africa. Each community has its own government, parliament, and varying degrees of legislative power, reflecting Spain’s decentralized system. The largest autonomous community by area is Castile and León, located in the northwest, known for its historic cities and castles. The smallest is the Balearic Islands, an archipelago in the Mediterranean famous for its beaches and tourism.

Catalonia, in the northeast, with Barcelona as its capital, is known for its distinct language, culture, and ongoing independence movement. In the south, Andalusia is the most populous community, renowned for flamenco, Moorish architecture, and vibrant festivals.
