Hungary is divided into 19 counties, known as 'megyék,' along with the capital city, Budapest, which has a special administrative status. These counties vary in size, population, and geographical features, from the flat Great Hungarian Plain to the rolling hills of Transdanubia.

Bács-Kiskun is the largest county by area, covering a significant portion of the Great Hungarian Plain. Pest County, which surrounds Budapest, is the most populous, with many commuters traveling daily to the capital. The smallest county, Komárom-Esztergom, is located in the northwest and is known for its historical significance along the Danube River.

Several counties are home to famous natural and cultural landmarks. Heves County features Hungary’s highest peak, Kékes, while Baranya County boasts the city of Pécs, a UNESCO-listed cultural hub with Roman and Ottoman influences. Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg, in the northeast, is known for its traditional Hungarian fruit brandy, pálinka, made from local plums and apricots.
