Slovakia is divided into 8 administrative regions, called “kraje” in Slovak. These regions serve as the highest level of territorial division in the country. Each region is named after its main city, which is also the administrative center. The eight regions are: Bratislava, Trnava, Trenčín, Nitra, Žilina, Banská Bystrica, Prešov, and Košice.

The Bratislava Region is located in the southwest and includes Slovakia’s capital, Bratislava. This region is the smallest by area but has the highest population density. Košice Region is in the east and is the second most populated region, with Košice as its main city. The Žilina Region, in the north, is known for its mountainous landscape and national parks.

Each region is further divided into districts, called “okresy.” There are a total of 79 districts in Slovakia, distributed among the eight regions. The regions are important centers for administration, regional planning, and public services. Regional governments are responsible for areas such as secondary education, transportation infrastructure, social services, and some aspects of healthcare.

Slovakia’s regions also reflect historical and cultural differences. For example, the Prešov Region is known for its multicultural heritage and traditional folk customs, while the Nitra Region is famous for its agricultural production. Banská Bystrica Region, located in central Slovakia, is known for its historical mining towns and scenic mountains.

The division into regions was established in the 1990s as part of administrative reforms. Since then, the regions have played an important role in local governance, EU funding distribution, and regional development projects. Each region has its own elected council and governor, giving local people a say in regional matters.
