Kazakhstan is divided into 17 regions (oblys) and 3 cities with special status: Astana (the capital), Almaty, and Shymkent. The regions vary in size, population, and geography, ranging from vast steppes to mountainous and desert areas.
The largest region by area is Karagandy Region, while the most populous is Almaty Region. The western regions (Atyrau, Mangystau, and West Kazakhstan) are rich in oil and gas, whereas the eastern regions (East Kazakhstan, Abai) have significant mining and metallurgical industries. The southern regions (Turkistan, Zhambyl, Kyzylorda) have a warm climate and are known for agriculture, especially cotton and fruit production. The northern regions (Akmola, Kostanay, North Kazakhstan) are part of the country’s grain belt.
Several regions have been reorganized in recent years: in 2022, Abai, Ulytau, and Jetisu regions were created from existing ones to improve governance and economic development.
