Maine has 16 counties, which serve as local government divisions for administrative and judicial functions. The most populous county is Cumberland County, home to the state's largest city, Portland, while the least populated is Piscataquis County in the central part of the state. The largest county by area is Aroostook County, covering a vast northern expanse of forests and farmland, whereas the smallest is Sagadahoc County, located along the southern coast. Many counties are named after Native American words, British and French influences, and geographical features. Maine’s counties reflect the state's landscape, from rugged coastlines and fishing villages to dense forests and remote mountainous regions.
