Papua New Guinea occupies the eastern half of the island of New Guinea and hundreds of smaller islands in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. It is one of the world's most culturally diverse countries, with more than 800 indigenous languages spoken across its territory.

The country is divided into 22 first-level administrative units. These include 20 provinces, the National Capital District around Port Moresby, and the Autonomous Region of Bougainville. Bougainville has a special autonomous status and has held a referendum in which a large majority voted in favor of independence, although the process has not yet been completed.

The geography of Papua New Guinea is extremely varied. High mountain ranges run through the center of the country, while dense rainforests, river systems, coastal plains, and island groups create many distinct regions. Transportation between provinces can be difficult, and some communities remain relatively isolated.

This quiz helps you learn the names and locations of all provinces, the National Capital District, and the Autonomous Region of Bougainville.
