Hebrew is the official language of Israel and a member of the Northwest Semitic branch of the Afro-Asiatic language family. It is spoken by around 9 million people, primarily in Israel and in Jewish communities around the world. Hebrew is unique among modern languages in that it was successfully revived after centuries of limited use as a liturgical and literary language.

For many centuries, Hebrew was not used as a native spoken language but was preserved in religious texts, scholarship, and prayer. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, during the rise of Jewish nationalism, efforts led by figures such as Eliezer Ben-Yehuda transformed Hebrew into a modern, spoken language. This revival is considered one of the most remarkable examples of language revitalization in history.

The modern form, known as Modern Hebrew, is based on Biblical Hebrew but adapted for everyday use, with influences from other languages such as Yiddish, Arabic, Russian, and English. Hebrew is written from right to left using its own script, which primarily records consonants. Today, Hebrew is a vital part of Israeli identity and continues to evolve as a living, dynamic language.
