Map Quiz – Lithuania: Counties

Questions: Alytus County, Kaunas County, Klaipėda County, Marijampolė County, Panevėžys County, Šiauliai County, Tauragė County, Telšiai County, Utena County, Vilnius County

Lithuania is divided into 10 counties, known as “apskritys” in Lithuanian. These counties serve as the highest-level administrative divisions in the country. Each county is named after its main city, which acts as the administrative center. The ten counties are: Alytus, Kaunas, Klaipėda, Marijampolė, Panevėžys, Šiauliai, Tauragė, Telšiai, Utena, and Vilnius.

The largest county by population is Vilnius County, which includes the capital city, Vilnius. Kaunas County is another major region and contains Lithuania’s second-largest city, Kaunas. Klaipėda County is located on the Baltic Sea coast and is an important center for trade and shipping due to its seaport.

Each county is further divided into municipalities, which are responsible for local government and services. The counties themselves no longer have separate administrative governments since 2010, but they are still used for certain state functions and statistical purposes.
