Latitude and longitude form a global coordinate system used to describe locations on Earth. Lines of latitude run east to west and measure distance north or south of the Equator, while lines of longitude run from pole to pole and measure distance east or west of the Prime Meridian.

Several lines of latitude have special geographic significance. The Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn mark the northern and southern limits where the Sun can appear directly overhead, while the Arctic and Antarctic Circles define the boundaries of the polar regions where periods of continuous daylight or darkness can occur.

The Prime Meridian, at 0° longitude, serves as the reference point for measuring longitude east and west. The North Pole and South Pole are located at 90°N and 90°S respectively, where all lines of longitude converge.

This quiz covers major reference lines, the poles, and selected latitude and longitude coordinates. Learning to locate them provides a foundation for understanding the global coordinate system and reading maps accurately.
