Arizona has 15 counties, making it one of the states with the fewest counties in the U.S. The most populous is Maricopa County, home to Phoenix and more than half of the state's population, while the least populated is Greenlee County in the eastern part of the state. The largest county by area is Coconino County, which includes the Grand Canyon, while the smallest is Santa Cruz County. Many counties were named after Native American tribes, Spanish terms, or geographical features. Arizona’s counties manage essential services such as law enforcement, public health, and transportation infrastructure, adapting to the state's varied landscape, from deserts and plateaus to mountain regions.
