New Jersey has 21 counties, which function as key administrative and judicial divisions within the state. The most populous county is Bergen County, located in the northeastern part of the state near New York City, while the least populated is Salem County in the southwest. The largest county by area is Burlington County, covering a mix of suburban and rural landscapes, whereas the smallest is Hudson County, a densely populated urban area along the Hudson River.

Many counties are named after British aristocrats, early American leaders, and indigenous terms. New Jersey’s counties range from major metropolitan hubs and industrial centers to farmland and coastal resort areas along the Jersey Shore.
