Africa is the second-largest continent in the world, covering about 30.37 million square kilometers and comprising 54 recognized countries. It is bounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, the Indian Ocean to the east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. The continent is diverse, featuring the world's largest desert, the Sahara, and the longest river, the Nile, which flows through countries such as Egypt, Sudan, and Uganda. Algeria, in North Africa, is the largest country by area, while Nigeria, in West Africa, is the most populous nation, with over 200 million people.
South Sudan became independent on July 9, 2011, and is the youngest country in the world. After decades of conflict, it separated from Sudan through a referendum in which the majority of the population voted for independence.
