Questions: Berat, Dibër, Durrës, Elbasan, Fier, Gjirokastër, Korçë, Kukës, Lezhë, Shkodër, Tiranë, Vlorë.

Albania is divided into 12 counties, known as 'qarqe'.

The largest county by area is Korçë, located in the southeast, known for its mountainous terrain and traditional Albanian folk music. Tirana County, which includes the capital city, is the most populous and serves as the political and economic center of the country. In contrast, the smallest county, Gjirokastër, is famous for its well-preserved Ottoman-era architecture and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Several counties are home to Albania’s most famous landmarks. Shkodër, in the north, features the historic Rozafa Castle and is located near Lake Shkodër, the largest lake in the Balkans. Vlorë County, along the southwestern coast, is known for its stunning beaches and is where Albania declared its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1912. Berat, often called the 'City of a Thousand Windows,' is another UNESCO-listed site with a mix of Ottoman and medieval architecture.
