In 1914, Europe looked very different from today. Several large empires dominated the continent, including the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Russian Empire, the German Empire, and the Ottoman Empire. Many modern countries did not yet exist as independent states.

National borders were shaped by monarchies and imperial rule, and regions such as the Balkans were politically unstable. Tensions between countries and alliances would soon lead to the outbreak of World War I.

In this historic map quiz, you will practice identifying the countries and empires of Europe as they appeared in 1914. This helps build an understanding of historical geography and the political situation before the war.
