Map Quiz – Malaysia: States and Federal Territories

Malaysia is divided into 13 states and 3 federal territories. Each state is further subdivided into administrative districts, known as “daerah” in Malay. In total, there are over 90 districts across the country. The number of districts in each state varies, with some states having only a few and others having many.

Peninsular Malaysia, located on the Malay Peninsula, consists of 11 states and 2 federal territories. States such as Johor, Selangor, and Perak have a large number of districts. For example, Johor is divided into 10 districts, while Selangor has 9. Each district has its own administrative center, usually located in the largest town or city in the area.

East Malaysia, located on the island of Borneo, includes the states of Sabah and Sarawak and the federal territory of Labuan. Sabah is divided into 27 districts, and Sarawak has 12 administrative divisions, which are further split into districts. East Malaysia is known for its large and often sparsely populated districts, especially in the interior regions.

The federal territories are Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, and Labuan. Kuala Lumpur is the national capital and is divided into several administrative divisions. Putrajaya serves as the administrative center of the federal government, and Labuan is an island territory off the coast of Sabah.

Districts in Malaysia serve as important administrative units. They are used for organizing local government services, development projects, and census activities. Each district is headed by a district officer, who coordinates government administration at the local level.
