State abbreviations in the United States are standardized short forms used to represent each of the 50 states. The most widely used system is the two-letter postal abbreviation, such as CA for California and NY for New York. These codes are designed to be concise and unambiguous.

The postal abbreviations are used in mailing addresses, databases, forms, and digital systems where space is limited or consistency is required. They are always written in uppercase and do not include periods. This distinguishes them from older traditional abbreviations like “Calif.” or “N.Y.”, which are now less common.

State abbreviations are also widely used outside postal contexts. They appear in data processing, geographic datasets, educational materials, and quizzes. Because each code is unique, they provide a reliable way to identify states in both human-readable and machine-readable formats.

In addition to postal abbreviations, other coding systems exist, such as the ISO 3166-2 standard, where U.S. states are represented with codes like US-CA or US-TX. These are often used in international contexts and technical applications.
