Map Quiz – Connecticut: Counties

image/svg+xml
Questions: Fairfield, Hartford, Litchfield, Middlesex, New Haven, New London, Tolland, Windham.

Connecticut has eight counties, making it one of the states with the fewest counties in the U.S. Unlike most states, Connecticut eliminated county government in 1960, meaning the counties exist only as geographical divisions rather than functioning administrative units.

The largest county by population is Fairfield County, which includes cities like Bridgeport and Stamford, while the smallest is Windham County in the northeast. Despite lacking county governments, these regions still serve as references for judicial districts, historical records, and regional planning. Connecticut’s counties reflect its colonial history, with names derived from British locations and figures from the 17th century.
