Illinois has 102 counties, each acting as a local government unit responsible for public services, including law enforcement, transportation infrastructure, and administrative functions. The most populous county is Cook County, which includes Chicago and its suburbs, making it one of the most populated counties in the United States. The least populated is Hardin County, located in the southeastern part of the state. The largest county by area is McLean County in central Illinois, while the smallest is Putnam County. Many counties are named after historical figures, Native American tribes, and military leaders. Illinois' counties reflect the state’s varied geography, from the rolling farmland of central Illinois to the forested hills of the Shawnee National Forest in the south and the urban centers in the northeast.
