Massachusetts has 14 counties, which serve as administrative divisions for local government functions. The most populous county is Middlesex County, which includes several major cities such as Cambridge and Lowell, while the least populated is Nantucket County, located on an island off the coast. The largest county by area is Worcester County, covering central Massachusetts, whereas the smallest is Nantucket County, which consists of a single island. Many counties are named after English locations, historical figures, and early colonial settlements. Massachusetts' counties reflect the state's mix of urban centers, coastal regions, and rural landscapes, from the bustling Greater Boston area to the rolling hills of the Berkshires.
